The Domain Name System (DNS) provides visitors access to websites using domain names rather than IP addresses.

How does DNS work?

DNS translates human-speak (domain names) into computer-speak (IP addresses). Domain names are text-based names used to identify a website or Internet location. IP addresses are strings of numbers used by every computer connected to the Internet to identify a website’s location and communicate with other computers and Web servers.

DNS translates the text-based website or location identifier a visitor enters to the number-based IP address of the associated website or Internet location. For example, coolexample.com is a domain name. 208.109.80.196 is an IP address associated with coolexample.com. DNS translates the domain name coolexample.com to the IP address 208.109.80.196.

Using DNS, we can enter easily-remembered text-based domain names and reach machine-readable Internet addresses.

How does DNS know which IP address to use?

Each domain name stores its DNS information in a zone file. Large collections of zone files for different domain names are stored on nameservers. Domain names point to nameservers to locate their zone files — to do this, a domain name must point to the nameserver holding its specific zone file.

How do I know which nameserver to use?

When you register a domain name with us, we automatically park the domain name and set its nameserver to our parking servers. If you activate the domain name or make changes to your website’s hosting, your hosting company provides the nameserver names or IP addresses where your domain name’s zone file is located. Use this information to update your domain name settings at your registrar. Introduction

So, you want a website, huh? Images and text to highlight your business, your hobby, maybe the delightful antics of your new puppy? No matter your ultimate goal, publishing your first website  can seem like a challenge. But it doesn’t have to be. In fact, it can be pretty fun. Grab a cup of your favorite ca”einated beverage and let’s get to work.

WebSite Tonight makes it easy to publish a website. Usually this involves complicated applications and a lot of technical acronyms (HTML, CSS, PHP), but WebSite Tonight lets you build your website using tools that are a lot like the word processing applications you’re used to. It requires a little patience and some creativity on your part, but when you’re done you’ll have created and published your own 3-page website.

We use a specific template and website style in this guide. You can follow the process  exactly as outlined in this guide to publish your website, or you can use this guide as an introduction to WebSite Tonight and what’s possible. It’s up to you.

In the next section, you’ll see a list of materials to gather before you get started. It’s not much.  Then we’ll walk through the process of setting up WebSite Tonight, which mainly involves hooking up your domain and choosing a template. With that out of the way, we’ll add elements to build the first page of a website that you can later expand to suit your personal interests or business.

Before You Start: Stuff You Need

If you can get the following things together before we start, it’ll make the rest of this process a lot smoother. That way, you won’t have to stop what you’re doing to find what you need to move ahead. It might take a few minutes, but it’s well worth the time to round up these four items: an idea, a domain name, a few images, some text.

An Idea If you don’t already know, start thinking of a few words that describe what this website should do for you. Promote your business? Show o” your hobbies or interests? A way to share family photos? Having an idea in mind helps to unleash your creativity.

A Domain Name A domain name is like the license plate you’re going to stick on your website. If you haven’t already registered a domain with us, go ahead and register a domain name you like.

A Few Images The images for your website can be anything from your business logo to photos to cartoons.  Images draw attention to the webpage and highlight the ideas you have for your website; they’ll be one of the first things we add.

If you don’t have images, grab your phone or your camera and get some. Don’t overthink it. If you have a physical location, take a picture of your business. If  not, take a picture of something related to your business. Draw something up on a napkin or piece of paper and take a picture of it. If this is a personal site, take a picture of yourself. It doesn’t need to be perfect.

How to make a website

Some Text Writing the content for your site can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Grab a notebook, or open up a word processing program and answer as many of these questions as you can. Try drafting 300 words (about a page) that expand on the idea for your website. If you have some existing content in a flier or brochure, use that.

The goal is to have something ready before we start to build your website.

Let’s Get Started

Once you’ve purchased WebSite Tonight and registered a domain name, you can set up your account. This part is pretty straight forward. It’s a lot like registering for anything online. You’ll need to pick a domain name, user name and password, and set up an email address for your site.

To Set Up Your Website Tonight Account

1.Log in to your Account Manager.

2. From My Products, click WebSite Tonight.

3. Click Launch next to the account you want to use.

4. If you accept the terms of the End User License Agreement, click Accept.

5. On the Site Settings page, enter your domain name, user name, password, email address and  company/individual name.

6. Click Next.

You’re ready to get started. Next, we’re going to select a layout and color for your website and then publish your Home page so that you have something to show your friends.

Once your account is set up, you can log in to your WebSite Tonight account by going directly to http://login.websitetonight.com. If you bookmark this page, you can quickly get to your website project whenever you have some time to work on it.

Selecting a Template

Once you’ve gone through those steps, WebSite Tonight will ask you how you want to begin. Let’s take the Flexible Path. Go to that option and click Select a Template.

You’re going to see more than 300 templates you can use to build your website. There are a lot of choices.

Let’s keep it simple for now. You can change your template any time you want. Under the All category, click on the template called Chroma. Pick a color and click on the template. We’re going to use yellow.

Now, go to Step 2. Apply Your Design and click Apply to My Site. Notice how you can also apply this template to a store and a blog? Those are a couple things you can explore later, once you’ve got your site published.

After you pick a template, click Work on your Site now.

How to make a website

Creating Your Home Page

So, we’ve set up WebSite Tonight, and we selected a template. Now we’re on the dashboard. Check it out—we’ll be spending most of our time here. Selecting a Main Title for Your Website

Before we add any content to our Home page, we need to select a main title for our website. In the template we chose, this is the the Your Title Text section. Whatever we write here will display on every page of our website, not just the Home page. If this is a personal website, you can use your own name or something creative like, “The Adventures of John Doe.” If you’re creating a website for your business, you’ll want to type the name of your business here instead.

Titles can be confusing in WebSite Tonight. There are basically two types: a title for your entire site (Cool Example) and titles, or headings, for the individual pages on your site (Home Page, About Us, Contact Us).

Click on the words Your Title Text to open the content block, and type or paste in the title of your website. We’re going to use “Cool Example.”From the dashboard, you can pick a font, color, and font size. You’ll find most of the functions you’d see in word-processing programs such as Microsoft Word. Go ahead and try it. We’re going to use Garamond and a 72px font size in our example.

In the lower right corner of the content block, click the icon that looks like a disc to save your changes.

Changing the Heading on Your Home Page

Your Home page is the first page that visitors see. WebSite Tonight uses the words “Home Page” as the main heading by default, but you can change it to anything you want. For this example, we’re going to use “Welcome.”

Under the Page tab, select Properties and then Page. We’re going to change the browser, heading, and button titles for this page. The Browser Title is the text that visitors see in the top of their browser window. The Heading Title is the main heading that displays for this particular page. Whatever we use for the Button Title displays on the main menu for our website. It’s the link our visitors will click on to return to this page.

You can replace Home Page with whatever you want. Let’s keep things simple and use the word Welcome for all of the titles. Leave the Filename (Home_Page.html) alone for now.

Click OK.

Notice that WebSite Tonight automatically changed the heading for your page and updated the main menu. This becomes even more convenient as you add more pages to your site. You can make these types of changes quickly and you won’t have to remember to update the name of your page in multiple places. You can take care of it in one place.

Adding Text to Your Page

All right, we have a heading for our Home page—Welcome—and now it’s time to write the text for it. Let’s grab some of that content you wrote up earlier and put it on your Welcome page. Below the heading for your page (Welcome), is a box with a blue border around it. Click on the words Click to add text, images, and more.

Write or paste some of your text inside the block. This is where you want to give visitors a broader idea of what your website is all about. Don’t forget that, on the dashboard, you’ll find most of the functions you’d see in word processing programs such as Microsoft Word. In this example, we’ll create a bulleted list using the formatting tools in the dashboard. Adding an Image to Your Page

Remember the pictures you set aside when we started? Let’s add one of them to this page. If you have a company logo, we’ll use that. If this is a personal website, you can use a picture of yourself or something that you think fits your personality.

There are a few di”erent ways you can add images in WebSite Tonight. We’re going to keep things simple and add a picture to the same content block we added our text to earlier.

If you haven’t already, click on the words you added to your Welcome page. Place your cursor before the first word, as though you were going to type something at the beginning of your text.

Under the Insert tab, click Images. From the drop-down menu, select Images.

You’re now looking at the Image Library, where you can add your own pictures select from more than 8,000 stock images in WebSite Tonight’s database. Because we already have our logo, we’re going to add that to the Image Library and use it on our page.

Go to the Upload Image tab, and click Browse to locate a picture on your computer. Once you’ve found it, click Open and then click Upload. This adds the image to your image library. Now you can use this picture anywhere on your website.

Select the My Images tab. Select your picture and click OK.

After you insert your image, you can make adjustments by clicking on your image and selecting Edit from your dashboard.

You can resize the image, change the color, or rotate it. For now, we only want to move our image to the right side of our text.

Once you’re inside the Edit Image window, select the Properties tab. To make our image line up on the right side of our text, select the icon that has a picture on the right and lines across the top and bottom.

Click OK

Here’s what our website looks like so far: We named our page, we added text, we even tossed in an image. Guess what? The first Web page for your site is complete! All we have to do it publish it. Let’s do that next.

Publishing Your First Web Page

Before you publish your website, you can click Preview to see how things will look (the Preview button is in the upper-right).

How do things look? Ready to go? If it’s not perfect, don’t worry–you can go back and make changes at any time, even after you publish. Ready?

Click Publish.

Select Publish Web Site. This is the first time we’re publishing, so let’s back up our website too (just in case we mess things up when we start to add more pages). Select Back up Web site prior to publishing.

Alright, here we go: select Publish All.

You’re live. Depending on when you set up your WebSite Tonight account, it can take a little bit of time for your website to display, but it might already be live. Go take a look. If your website isn’t displaying yet, don’t worry. It’ll be there in a few hours. Let’s get started on your next page in the meantime.

Adding Your About Us Page

How do you like your new Home page? As you keep going, you’ll learn a lot more about what you can do in WebSite Tonight, and you’ll be able to go back anywhere on your website to apply the skills you’ve learned.

With that in mind, let’s add a new page to your website. It’ll display another image and some more of your text. We’re going to give visitors a little more information about what you’re all about.

On the dashboard, go to the Page tab and mouse over Add Pages. You can see there are many options, but for now let’s click Traditional Page.

From the Add Pages window, we’re looking at even more options. Let’s make things simple by selecting Copy of existing page. Select Welcome in the drop-down menu and then click Add Page.

The most important new option that displays is the Page Title field. For now, let’s call the page we’re adding About Us (if you’re building a personal website, use something like About Me or My Biography). Once you’ve typed that in the field, ignore all the other options for right now and click OK.

Now we’re looking at the second page of your website, which is an exact copy of the first. This is one of the easiest ways to add a new page to your website. You already know how to add text to this layout and change or edit the images. To make things simple, we’re going to keep the text on the left and the image on the right. All we need to do is replace what’s there now with something new. Let’s get to work.

Updating the Content on Your About Us Page

Now it’s time to grab some more of that text you wrote earlier and put it on your About Us page. instead of explaining what we do, we’ll use some of the stu” we wrote down earlier to write a little bit about our history; we’ll create a business/personal biography. Under the title of your page (Welcome), is the content you wrote earlier. Click on some of the words.

Delete the text and the picture that’s there now and write (or copy) the text you prepared earlier that tells a little bit about the history of your business or a short personal biography. Don’t forget that, on the dashboard, you’ll find most of the functions you’d see in word processing programs such as Microsoft Word.

In our example, we’ll use some of the word processing functions to make one of our paragraphs stand out more. We’ll change the font, color, and size of the text. This is an easy way to call attention to something in particular on your web page.

Adding a Picture to Your About Us Page

Once you’ve finished adding your story, place your cursor before the first word, as though you were going to type something at the beginning of your text.

Under the Insert tab, click Images. From the drop-down menu, select Images.

You’re now looking at the Image Library window. Again, you can choose from WebSite Tonight’s database of more than 8,000 stock images, or use your own pictures. If you have a picture of your business or another personal picture you like, let’s use that.

Again, let’s go to the Upload Image tab, and click Browse to locate a picture on your computer. Once you’ve found it, click Open and then click Upload. This adds the image to your image library. Now you can use this picture on your new About Us page.

Go to the My Images tab, select your picture and click OK.

Just as we did on our Welcome page, let’s edit the properties of our picture so that it displays on the right side of the screen. Click on your picture. Select Edit from your dashboard and select the Properties tab.

To make our image line up on the right-side of our text, select the icon that has a picture on the right and lines across the top and bottom.

Click OK.

Congratulations! You’ve got a 2-page website just about complete. You should have an About Us page with the same basic layout as you Home Page—only the content has changed and WebSite Tonight added another menu item to your site.   Publishing Your About Us Page

You’re going to publish your About Us page thesame way you published your first page in WebSite Tonight.

You can always preview your page, if you want to get a feel for what the finished product will look like. But remember: it doesn’t have to be perfect. The most important thing is to get your site up and information about yourself and your business out there. You can always come back to this spot in WebSite Tonight if you think of something new to say or find a better picture that explains what you’re all about.

When you’re finished making changes to your page, click Publish. Click Publish Web Site. We’ve added a new page, so let’s back up our website. Select Back up Web site prior to publishing. Press the Publish All button.

You’ve finished 2 pages. Nice work! Now we’re going to add a page that makes it really easy for people to contact you when they visit your website.

Adding Your Contact Us Page

We’ve finished two pages. Now we’re going to add a page that has a form that visitors can fill out on your website. When they finish filling out the form, WebSite Tonight will send you an email with their information.

Spammers scan websites for email addresses. When you publish your email address on your website, you make it easy for them to capture and use your address to send you electronic junk mail. A Web form makes it easy for visitors to contact you and you don’t have to publish your email address. This means less junk in your inbox.

Remember how to add a page to your website? Right. Go to the Page tab, and from the Add Pages drop-down menu, click Traditional Page.

Again, let’s use Copy of existing page (you can use either of the two you just created), and click Add Page. Enter Contact Us in the Page Title field and click OK.

Now, click anywhere on the content you added to your previous page. Once you’re ready to start editing, delete the text and the picture on this page. You should have a blank space in the main area of your Contact Us page.

Adding a Form to Your Contact Us Page

Go back to the dashboard. From the Insert tab, go to the Forms drop-down menu and click Contact Form.

Now, where a picture and text used to be, there’s now a contact form that you’d commonly see on other websites. Pretty cool, right? We could leave this form as-is, but we’re going to edit our form a little.

Double-click anywhere on the contact form to display the Edit Form window.

By double-clicking in the contact form, you can select and change the descriptions of the data fields (such as First Name or Daytime Phone) and you can even delete them entirely. Double-click the text under Contact Information.

Let’s replace this text with something more conversational. How about, “Thanks for visiting our site. We’d love to hear from you. Please take a few moments to share your thoughts.”

On the left, make sure the Email to field has the email address you want to use with this form. This is the same email address you used when you set up your account, but you can change it to something else if you’d like. WebSite Tonight will send the content of this form to the email address listed here.

You can also customize the subject line of the emails you’re going to receive. This makes it easy to see if a message in your inbox came from the form on your website. Let’s change it from “Contact Form” to “You Got a Message from Your Website.”

Click OK.

That’s it for your Contact Us page. You’re finished. As soon as we publish your site, you’ll have a complete, 3-page website that explains what you do and makes it easy for visitors to contact you. Pretty cool, right? Click the Publish button in the upper-right, and update your website.

What’s Next?

What’s next? Well, you’re a website developer now and the Internet is a big place. The best thing might be to open WebSite Tonight from time to time to see what else you can add to your website or to update the pages you already created.

Planning Your Site’s Content

The next step is to devise the website’s layout. It’s always good to have all your information ready so the website comes together quickly.

FIVE QUESTIONS YOU MUST ANSWER

Brian came up with five questions to answer prior to working on the website. He figures if he has an exact plan for meeting visitor’s needs, he can build it accordingly. He also wants to build it quickly.

• What type of group do you have? Who are you? A sports team, church youth group,

hobby circle, or school club?

This is an easy one for Brian to answer. The website is for the CASL, a sports group.

• Who’s your audience? Parents, other groups, or future members?

Knowing who your audience is helps drive the direction of the site. Think about who will visit your site. Brian’s audience is the league members and their parents, who are looking for practice and game schedules and other league news.

• What is the goal of the website and what can visitors do?

Brian’s players live in di!erent areas of the city. Because there are so many of them and only one of him, a website is perfect. It’s a one-stop place for everyone to view game and practice schedules, team news, fundraiser information, and to submit their ideas. This information will decrease the amount of missed phone calls, schedule mix-ups, and unnecessary driving.

• Do you have images/content?

Brian has all the team pictures and content ready. He also asked a few parents to submit their pictures from the games.

Getting Started

With WebSite Tonight templates, you have options for starting from a blank slate, picking a central theme, or building pages based on information you provide. Because Brian has his content and images but little experience, he selects the Flexible Path option and a sports template.

LOGGING IN TO YOUR WEBSITE TONIGHT

You have to set up your WebSite Tonight account before you can log in and start designing. Once you’ve set up your account, you can log in directly by typing login.websitetonight.com in your Web browser.

If this is your first time logging in to your WebSite Tonight account, we recommend  visiting our Help Center and reading Setting up WebSite Tonight for the First Time.

To Log in to Your Account

1. Log in to your Account Manager.

2. In the My Products list, click WebSite Tonight.

3. In your Account list, click Launch next to your domain name.

4. Read the Ender User License Agreement, and then click I Accept.

5. Complete the fields for your website’s settings.

6. Click Select a Template and then select Flexible Path.

SELECTING THE SITE TEMPLATE

You can select and customize a template that fits your site’s theme.

For the Soccer League site, Brian selects the Fitness template from the Sports template list. It is exactly what Brian is looking for and fits his site’s theme perfectly.

Select the Template

1. From Template Options, click See More Templates.

2. From the Category menu, select a category.

3. Click Update.

4. Scroll to view the available templates. To view a template in full size, click the template image, and then click Enlarge View.

5. Click the template image to select it.

Note: When you select a template, it is highlighted in orange.

6. To change the color of the template theme, select a color block from the right side of the template image.

7. To choose a template for your site, click Apply to My Site.

Build the Home page

The Home page gives visitors a first impression of your group. Brian is ready to personalize his with team pictures and league information.

USING THE PAGE DESIGNER

The page designer is your tool for creating, editing, and formatting your site. Brian knows he is going to spend a lot of time in the page designer, so he wants to take his time getting to know the ins and outs of how it works. Even though Brian is pretty comfortable adding content to the site, he still works in small stages so he doesn’t get overwhelmed. Start by launching the page designer – you’ll do all your adding, editing, and formatting there.

ADDING TEXT TO YOUR SITE

The bulk of the data on your site’s pages is housed in content blocks, which are essentially boxes of text or images. You can add multiple content blocks to a page and customize the text or images in each block.

To Add Text to Your Site

1. From the Design menu, click Launch the Page Designer.

2. Click the content block where you want to add text.

3. Enter your text. When you’re finished, click Save.

4. Continue adding content as needed.

NOTE: To make sure your text doesn’t get disjointed, you need to either type the text directly into the text box or copy and paste the text from a program like Notepad or TextEdit.

UPLOADING IMAGES

The Image Library in WebSite Tonight stores all the images for your site. Brian uploads images of the team and then adds them to his Home page. First, upload an image, and then add it to your site.

To Upload Images to the Image Library

1. Go to the Insert tab, and then, from the Images menu, select Images.

2. Go to the Upload Image tab.

3. Click Browse, select an image, and then click Upload File.

4. Go to the My Images tab to view all uploaded images.

To Add Images to a Content Block

1. Click the content block where you want to insert the image.

2. Go to the Insert tab, and then, from the Images menu, select Images.

3. Click the image you want to insert, and click OK.

Brian notices that one of the team pictures he added was very large, and he wants to resize it so he can fit more text in the box. Here’s how he resizes the photo:

To Resize an Image

1. Double-click the image in the content block.

2. In the Edit Image window, go to the Image Effects tab.

3. From the Select Image Effects menu, select Resize.

4. Once you’ve resized the image, click Accept Effect, and then click OK.

ADDING PAGES

Because Brian wants to have a game calendar and a form in addition to his home page, he’ll add two more pages to his site. Brian uses the blank page option because it offers the most flexibility for his content.

To Add Another Page

1. Launch the Page Designer.

2. From the Add Pages menu, select Traditional Page.

3. Select Blank Page, and then click Add Page.

4. Enter the name of the page, and then click OK.

Page Properties lets you customize the browser display and page title. The appropriate titles let visitors know which site they are visiting and what your site is about.

To Edit Page Properties

1. Go to the Page tab, and then, from the Properties menu, select Page.

2. From the Properties menu, select Page.

3. Update the titles, and then click Apply.

Building a Calendar page

Building an event calendar lets you to organize events and make them easily viewable. Now that  Brian has another page added, he can create a calendar so his visitors can find out when and  where they can attend games, practices, and events hosted by the league.

To Add an Event Calendar

1. Launch Page Designer.

2. Select the page you want to add the calendar to.

3. Go to the Insert tab, and, from the Calendar menu, select Event Calendar.

The calendar auto saves on the page where you insert it.

4. Enter the Calendar name, and then select a Calendar size and Calendar Style. You can also change your preferences for Display month and Display year.

5. Click OK.

To Create an Event in Event Calendar

1. Launch the Page Designer.

2. Double-click the calendar, and then double-click the day of your event.

3. Add event details, and click OK.

You must publish your website for the changes to take effect. After your initial publish, every time you add, delete, or edit an event, your calendar automatically updates.

Here’s what the Calendar page looks like after Brian uploads all the game schedules:

Continue adding pages as needed for your site. Brian uses the Add Pages menu and adds the following pages:

Contact This page includes the league’s contact information (addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses) and maps to the playing fields.

News This page will change frequently. Brian sets it up with a list of monthly fundraisers, league meetings, and playo! schedules.

The Final Touches

Before publishing your site, there are a few more things to do. Brian wants players and parents to be able to email him, so he set up an email address with the free account that came with WebSite Tonight.

SETTING UP AN EMAIL ACCOUNT

Since Brian’s domain name is registered here, it’s easy for him to set up an email account. If your domain name is registered with another registrar, set up your email in that account.

To Set Up an Email Account

1. Log in to your Account Manager.

2. In the My Products list, click Email.

3. Click Setup Account for the email account you want to use.

4. If an option to add email addresses or view all email plans displays, click View All to display all of your email plans.

5. Click Add next to the plan you want to use.

6. Complete the on-screen fields, and then click OK.

 

Your email account might take up to 30 minutes to become active.

PREVIEWING AND PUBLISHING YOUR SITE

Now that your site’s ready, let’s preview it. In preview mode, click through the menu and view your site as it will look online. Brian does this step with a pen and paper to make note of anything he doesn’t like or wants to change.

To Preview Your Site 

1. Click Preview.

2. Click through your pages to verify everything works. If it looks good, it’s time to publish!

To Publish Your Site

1. Click Publish.

2. Select both Publish Web Site and Back up Web Site prior to publishing.

3. Click Publish All.

4. Select View Site.

Congratulations!  Your website is published. Brian feels confident that his new site will attract new players and give the current members and their parents the information they need. When my friends Ali and Ben got engaged, they needed a way to share their story with their friends and family, but they didn’t know how. I suggested they create a website to display their engagement pictures and share their story with their guests prior to the wedding.

Ali and Ben were so excited when they had their 3-page wedding website up and running. Here’s how they did it in a few hours and how you can, too.

Register a Domain Name

The first step is to register a domain name. Having a short and topic-related website address makes it easy for visitors to remember. Ali already had a few good wedding-related domain names in mind:

I recommended they use www.benandali.com because it’s short, simple, and easy to remember. Plus, they can use it for years to come for other events and purposes. They agreed and registered the domain.

Plan The Design

Gathering all of your website’s material first makes designing and publishing your site a breeze.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Before diving in, consider this:

• Who’s your audience?

For Ali and Ben, having a wedding website was an easy way to make sure everyone stayed in the loop on all their wedding events. Their audience was friends and family.

• What do you want to share?

Since many of their family members and friends didn’t know their engagement story, Ali and Ben decided it should be the cover story on their wedding website. They sat down and typed out their story, and all the wedding information they wanted on the site. All they had to do

was copy and paste it into the template when they were ready.

To make sure your text doesn’t get disjointed, you need to either type the text directly into the content box, or copy and paste the text from a program that doesn’t  have any formatting, like Notepad or TextEdit.

• Do you have good images?

Ali wanted to have pictures accompany their engagement story, especially because both of their families live in di”erent cities. She figured pictures of them would make introductions a bit easier for both families. Select a few pictures you’d like displayed on your website. Make sure the images are saved as JPGs or PNGs and that they do not exceed 500 x 500 pixels.

To recap, this is what you’ll need before you start your website:

• Your story (in writing)

• Photos in the right format and size

• Hotel, restaurant, and car rental information including addresses, phone numbers, and URLs

Log in to WebSite Tonight

No need for cold feet when you’re armed with all your materials and WebSite Tonight. Just follow along as Ali and Ben plug their information into one of our wedding templates. The initial website setup takes only a few steps. I walked Ali and Ben through it the first time. After that, they were o” and running. Now you can do the same, and we’ll show you how.

LOGGING IN TO WebSite Tonight

You have to set up your WebSite Tonight account before you can log in and start designing. If this is your first time logging in to your WebSite Tonight account, we recommend visiting our Help Center and reading Setting up WebSite Tonight for the First Time.

To Log in to WebSite Tonight

1. Log in to your Account Manager.

2. In the My Products list, click WebSite Tonight.

3. In the account list, click Launch next to your domain name.

4. Click Select a Template, and then select the Flexible Path.

Ali and Ben selected the Flexible Path because it took only a few steps to select the template and

apply it to the site.

You can also log in to WebSite Tonight by going to login.websitetonight.com in your Web browser.

SELECTING THE SITE TEMPLATE

Selecting a site template was easy for Ali and Ben because they knew exactly what they wanted: a wedding theme. In two steps, they selected a template and applied it to their site.

There are many wedding templates for you to choose from. When you select a template, it is highlighted in orange. To view a template, click the template image, and then click Enlarge View.

Step 1: Select a Design

1. From Template Options, click See

More Templates.

2. From the Category menu, click Event & Parties.

3. Click Update.

4. Scroll to view the available templates.

5. Select a template by clicking the template image.

Ali and Ben selected the template Our Wedding for their site. Ali thought it was romantic, but not too girly for Ben. Here’s what the original template looked like before they changed the color scheme and background image:

 

They changed the background color to blue to fit their wedding colors and to add a touch of masculinity.

 

Next, they applied the design to their site. Applying the design connects the template to your website and lets you start adding pictures and text.

Step 2: Apply Your Design

1. To apply the template, click Apply to My Site.

2. Click Work on My Site to get started.

Build The Home Page

Now that you’ve selected a template, it’s time to personalize it with your pictures and text. Ali and Ben added a personal touch by sharing their story on their home page. You can do the same, or add your own unique style. Let’s get started on your very first page!

USING THE WebSite Tonight PAGE DESIGNER

Adding content and pictures makes the website start to come alive. Ali and Ben did this part in stages. They started by adding their story. Once they got more comfortable, they added a picture in the header and then moved down the page adding content one bit at a time. We’ll walk you through the same process.

Let’s start by launching the Page Designer – you’ll do all your adding, editing, and formatting in here.

To Launch the Page Designer

1. From the Design menu, click Launch Page Designer. It looks like this:

 

ADDING TEXT TO YOUR SITE

You’ll spend a lot of time in the Page Designer formatting and editing your website’s pages. The bulk of the data on your site’s pages is housed in content blocks, which are essentially boxes of text or images. You can add multiple content blocks to a page and customize the text or images in each block.

To Add Text to Your Site

1. Click the content block where you want to add the text.

2. Enter your text. When you’re done adding your text, click Save.

3. (Optional) To add another content block, from the Insert tab, click Block.

To make sure your text doesn’t get disjointed, you need to either type the text directly into the content box, or copy and paste the text from a program that doesn’t have any formatting, like Notepad or TextEdit.

To Edit the Header and Sub-header Text

1. Make sure you’re still in the Page Designer.
2. Click the text in the header box.
3. Customize the text in the content box, and then click Save.

UPLOADING IMAGES

Ali and Ben replaced the default template image with their own, and you can do the same. The Image Library in WebSite Tonight stores all the images for your site. First, upload an image, and then add it to your site.

To Upload Images to the Image Library

1. Make sure you’re still in the Page Designer.

2. Go to the the Insert tab.

3. From the Images menu, select Images.

4. Click the Upload Image tab.

5. For each image you want to upload, click Browse, and then select it from a folder on your

computer.

6. Click Upload File.

7. Go to the My Images tab to view all uploaded images.

 

Now that you’ve uploaded your images to the Image Library, you can replace the template’s default image with one of your own.

To Change the Template Image

1. Make sure you’re still in the Page Designer.

2. Double-click the image in the header.

3. Click the image to select it, and then click Change Image.

4. From the My Images tab, click the image you want, and then click OK.

5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

At this point, Ali and Ben were pros at replacing images in their template, but they wanted to add an image next to the text on their site. They uploaded the image they wanted to the Image Library and then followed the steps to add an image to a content box.

To Add Images to a Content Box

1. Make sure you’re still in the Page Designer.

2. Click the content block you want to add an image to.

3. Position your cursor where you want to add the image.

4. Go to the Insert tab.

5. From the Images menu, select Images.

6. From the My Images tab, select the image you want, and then click OK.

Ali noticed that one of the images she added was very large and she wanted to resize it so she could fit more text in the box. Here’s how she resized her image:

To Resize Images

1. Double-click the image in the content box.

2. From the Edit Image pop-up, click the Image Effects tab.

3. From the Select Image Effects menu, select Resize.

4. Enter a height and width for the image, or select a percentage of the original size.

5. When you’re done resizing, click Accept Effect, and then click OK.

Adding Another Page

Once Ali had her pictures resized and was happy with the home page, she and Ben decided to add a wedding details page with hotel, car rental, and venue information for those visiting from

out of town. Here’s how they did it.

ADDING A WEDDING DETAILS PAGE

You can customize your wedding details page any way you like. To help friends and family, Ali and Ben added local restaurants and hotels along with their ceremony’s details.

To Add a Page

1. From the Design menu, select Launch Page Designer.

2. In the Page tab, from the Add Pages menu, select Traditional Page.

3. Select Blank Page, and then click Add Page.

4. In the Page Title field, enter the name of your page. Ali and Ben named theirs “Wedding

Details.”

5. Click Change Layout, select a layout, and then click OK.

6. Click Apply.

 

To Add Content to the Wedding Details Page

1. Make sure you’re still in the Page Designer.

1. Click the content block where you want to add the text.

2. Copy and paste your content, or type it in the content box.

3. When you’re finished, click Save.

Setting Up Your Email Account

Because WebSite Tonight o”ers a free email address, it’s easy for Ali and Ben to set up their email address.

To Set Up an Email Account

1. Log in to your Account Manager.

2. In the My Products list, click Free Products.

3. Click Email Account List.

4. (Optional) Click Use Credit next to Free Email with hosting for your WebSite Tonight account.

5. Click Setup Account for the email account you want to use.

6. If an option to add addresses or view all email displays, click View All to display all of your email plans.

7. Click Add for the email plan you want to use.

8. Complete the fields, and then click OK.

Your email account can take up to 48 hours to become active.

Building a Guestbook Page

A guestbook lets your friends and family comment on your website. Comments let you know  guests have visited your site and congratulate you or ask questions about your ceremony.

You will be asked to enter an email address to manage the guestbook entries. We recommend creating email addresses at your domain name. For example, Ali and Ben created rsvp@benandali.com.

To Create a Guestbook

1. Log in to WebSite Tonight.

2. From the Design menu, select Launch Page Designer.

3. From the the Page tab, from the Add Pages menu, select Guestbook Page.

4. Enter your email address.

5. Click Setup Guestbook.

6. The page preview displays. Double-click the image to manage your guestbook.

Preview and Publish Your Site

You’re almost done! These are the last steps before your site goes live. This is the really fun part! Before you publish your site, let’s see what it will look like online.

PREVIEWING YOUR SITE

Preview mode lets you see what your site will look like online prior to publishing. Take notes if there’s anything you want to change before you publish your site.

To Preview Your Site 

1. Click Preview.

2. View each page, and test the links.

If everything looks great, you’re ready to publish your site!

To Publish Your Site

1. Click Publish.

2. Select both Publish Web Site and Back up Web Site prior to publishing.

3. Click Publish All.

4. Click View Site.

5. Click Guestbook, and be the first to leave a message.

Congratulations! You just published your wedding website.

How To Make A Website – Getting Your Small Business Online in One Night 

Introduction

My buddy, Jack, owns a sweet café in the southwest corner of downtown. The bulk of his business is co!ee and tea drinks, but he wants to increase sales of his co!ee beans, loose teas and related products.

Jack also features some local jazz artists on weekends, and they’re all looking to reach new audiences. In addition to the café products, Jack wants to use his website to promote his live music schedule, as well as sell CDs, shirts and other products from the artists.

As a small business owner, you know how little time you have. Jack’s no di!erent. I promised to get Java the Hut’s website up and running in a couple of hours.

BECOME THE MASTER OF YOUR DOMAIN

What do you mean you don’t have a domain name? Well, let’s fix that. The first thing you need to get your business online is a domain name. You can register a domain name that matches your business’ name, or one that closely matches the products or services you want to sell.

Jack owns these domains: javathehut.me, javathehut.net, java-the-hut.com, and javathehut.biz

PLAN YOUR SITE’S CONTENT

With my guidance and WebSite Tonight, Java the Hut will be online in no time. In fact, with this guide, a strong dose of patience and a little preparation, you can create a custom website before you open your doors tomorrow morning.

Five for five

The preparation involves answering a few questions and gathering a few things before you dig in.

Follow along to see how easy it is for Jack and for your business, too. I asked Jack the following five questions to help design the first five pages:

1. Q: Who are you and what is your brand?
2. A: Java the Hut – co!ee, tea, products and music with a local flare. A little fair trade, and a focus on the individual artist.
3. Q: Who’s your audience?
4. A: Everyone! No really, co!ee and/or tea enthusiasts who enjoy spending their discretionary funds on good products with a conscience. Music lovers – especially jazz and local artists.
5. Q: What’s the goal of the website?
6. A: The goal is to increase sales of products, and also increase tra”c to the café. In addition, we’ll feature and promote our local jazz musicians by publishing our live music schedule and selling their CDs. I hope the site will let visitors share ideas and connect the way they do in the café.
7. Q: What can visitors do?
8. A: Visitors can get information about the café, and learn about products and special events. They can also provide feedback through product and music reviews.
9. Q: Do you have good pictures and content?
10. A: I do! I’ve been collecting pictures for a couple of months, and I maintain a notebook with details about my products and the musicians I love.

To recap, here’s what you need:

1. A registered domain name
2. A WebSite Tonight account
3. An email account and other contact information
4. Content and pictures

Getting Started

WebSite Tonight makes it easy with options for starting from a blank slate, picking a central theme, or building pages for you based on information you provide. Because I have a little experience and Jack already had content and images, we selected the Flexible Path option with a central theme (or template).

LOGGING IN TO WEBSITE TONIGHT

When you first log in to WebSite Tonight, you need to go through the Account Manager. You can also log in to WebSite Tonight by going to login.websitetonight.com in your Web browser.

To Log in through the Account Manager

• Log in to the Account Manager.
• In the My Products list, click WebSite Tonight.
• In your Account list, click Launch next to your domain name.
• Read and click I Accept to agree to the End User License Agreement.
• Complete the fields for your website’s settings.
• Click Select a Template to choose the Flexible Path.

SELECTING THE SITE TEMPLATE

For the Java the Hut site, we selected the Retro Sign Template from the Generic templates list. It fits the color scheme Jack was looking for, and allows for room to grow his site and online sales.

Choose any template you like, but if you want to sell products online and/or maintain a blog, pick one that works with those options. The Works with icons below templates indicate which options they work with.

To Select the Template

• From Template Options, select See More Templates.
• From the Category menu, select a category.
• Click Update.
• Use the scroll bar to view the available templates. To view a template in full size, click the template image, and then click Enlarge View.
• Click the template image to select it. When a template is selected, it is highlighted in orange.
• To change the color of the template theme, select a color block from the right side of the template image.
• To choose the template for your site, click Apply to my Site.

Building the Home Page

The home page o!ers the first impression of your website. It’s essential that visitors are pleased and want to hang around. I recommended that Jack create a clean first page with an image of his café, a description and an easy navigation menu.

USING THE PAGE DESIGNER

The page designer is your window to creating, editing and formatting your website’s pages. We’ll spend some time here creating each page and making sure javathehut.biz is easy to navigate.

Here’s where that dose of patience and maybe a little chamomile tea will ease the pain. In addition, you should update the page properties for each page to ensure that your links make sense. The Properties menu lets you set your page properties such as the browser, heading and button titles that display when someone visits your website.

To Edit the Header and Sub-header

• Launch the Page Designer.
• Click Your Title Text in the header box.
• Enter your business name, format the font as desired, and then click Save.

To Continue Editing the Home Page Content

• Click in the box to add a content block.
• Click To add text, images, and more.
• Enter your text. When you’re done adding your text, click Save.
• Continue adding content as needed.

To make sure your text doesn’t get disjointed, you either need to type the text directly into the text box, or copy and paste the text from a program such as Notepad or TextEdit that doesn’t have any formatting.

To Add Pictures to a Text Box

• Click the text box you want the picture inserted into.
• Go to the Insert tab, and then from the Images menu, select Images.
• Click the image you want inserted, and click OK.

You might be prompted to upload your photos if you haven’t done so. If you are using your own photos taken with your digital camera, you might need to resize the images.

To Resize an Image

• Double-click the image in the text box.
• In the Edit Image window, go to the Image Effects tab.
• Under Select Image Effects, select Resize from the menu.
• When you’re done resizing, click Accept Effect, and then click OK.

The Page Properties menu lets you customize the browser display and page title. The appropriate titles let visitors know which site they are visiting and what your business is about.

To Edit Page Properties

• Launch the Page Designer.
• From the Properties menu, select Page.
• On the Properties page, update the titles. The Tell me More section explains how each title
• displays for your site.
• Click Apply.

ADDING ADDITIONAL PAGES

Because Jack and I agreed to get him started with five pages, we’ll add four more in addition to the home page. The other pages are: Contact, Menu, Events and Featured Products. Here’s how we created the Menu page:

Because it’s flexible with any type of content, we used the blank page option.

To Add Another Page

• Launch the Page Designer.
• From the Add Pages menu, select Traditional Page.
• Select Blank Page, and then click Add Page.
• Enter the name of the page, and then click OK.

Continue adding pages as needed for your site. For each of the additional pages, we used the Add Pages feature and added the following:

Contact Page The address, phone number, email address, maps, and directions from major routes.

Events This page will change frequently. We set it up with a list of weekly musical guests and any major events for the current month.

Featured Products This page will serve as a base for limited-time co!ee and tea o!ers, or related products.

The Finishing Touches

There are a few things to do before your site is ready for visitors. Jack wants customers to email him, so we set up an email address with the free account that came with WebSite Tonight. You also need to preview and publish your site.
