Germany’s .de Was Displaced As The Most Popular Country Code Extension

Verisign released its third quarter Domain Industry
The report said there were 174 million domain names registered worldwide (the total across all extensions) at the end of the third quarter (Sept. 30). That is an increase of 3% over the previous quarter and 19% over the total registered at the end of the same quarter last year.

Country code domains continued to grow faster than the rate the overall registration market is expanding. At the end of 3Q 2008 just under

69 million ccTLD registration were in force, a jump of 5% over the previous quarter and 26% over the same quarter last year. For the first time, Germany’s .de was displaced as the most popular country code extension, being passed by China’s .cn. Meanwhile Australia’s .au joined the top ten ccTLD list for the first time, displacing Swizterland’s .ch.

Though the total number of registrations continues to expand, growth rates in both global and ccTLDs are slowing down from previous quarters. Verisign said that the declining payments for traffic that domain owners are seeing from Google is part of the reason for the slowing rate of new registrations and a rising rate of non-renewals.

The term geodomain refers to domain names that are the same as those of geographic entities, such as cities and countries. Associated Cities is a trade association founded in 2003. Its membership is limited to sites operating at the .com versions of city names. The association has 130 members and holds an annual event called the “Geodomain Expo.” The 2007 expo was held November 16 and 17 in San Francisco and featured an auction of domain names. The 2008 GeoDomain expo was held in Chicago on July 10-12 and included many speakers and presentations, as well domain name auctions

vodka maker paid $3 million for VODKA.com

The billionaire Russian entrepreneur behind Russia’s biggest vodka maker has paid $3 million to acquire the vodka.com domain, part of a bid to expand into the U.S. market, a broker said on Thursday.

Sedo.com, the Web domain brokering unit that is part of Germany’s United Internet AG, said it had acted as the sales agent in the deal. (domain registration in 1999-09)
Conglomerate Russian Standard Co., controlled by Roustam Tariko, paid $3 million to an undisclosed seller in a deal completed Dec. 4, according to a Sedo.com spokesman. A New York-based spokeswoman for Russian Standard confirmed the $3 million price tag.
Russian Standard entered the U.S. market in September 2005 with its Imperia brand. The recipe for Imperia is said to have been discovered by 19th century
Russian scientist Dimitri Mendeleev, inventor of chemistry’s periodic table of elements.
Russian Standard Co. controls not only two-thirds of the sales of premium vodka in Russia, but also owns Russian Standard Bank, the country’s largest private bank.

Earlier this year, a source told Reuters that Sex.com had sold for around $12 million to a Boston-based company called Escom LLC, although the exact figure has never been disclosed
